Cambio Di Stagione

Cambio di stagione (wardrobe change) is a conceptual project produced by Alessandra Gervasio which aims to illustrate the effect that the psychotherapeutic path has had on her life, in a series of self-portraits that reconcile the introspection of the self with the discovery of the body, freeing herself from the position of the object and becoming the Subject, at the forefront of the transmission of the message and at the base of the structure of the image.

The name of the initiative is didactic and deals with a real “cambio di stagione”, a representative metaphor of the therapeutic path, in which one must be willing to totally strip one’s beliefs by throwing them away, in such a way as to be able to re-discuss them one by one. one and eventually replace them with new, healthier and more functional structures.

The project consists of several levels of reading, passing beyond the visual level we reach an academic research from a psychological point of view, also carried out thanks to the theoretical comparison with Dr. Vito Mingolla, based on the functioning of Internal Operating Models, mental structures formed in infancy they present a map on the idea that one has of oneself, of the other, and of us in relation to the other, and the eventual change of the latter during the course of treatment.

The body is the vehicle of the Self, in a dualistic space composed of memories and re-elaboration: at the bottom, the memories, in a chaos of restlessness and confusion, at the top, instead, a crutch, symbol of the fragility of the path undertaken, the real protagonist of the project, now functional as a support structure, now functional as a reminder of the progress made by the subject, in an empty space composed only of threads ready to be re-furnished in the most congenial way.

The theme of the project rises above the concept of nudity, through a I see I do not see that has its say in a historical period in which the objectification of bodies is now standard and the term “political body” is often too little known to most, in poses that hide the fulcrum of the self from the viewer’s eye, from which, however, she asks to be looked at in order to exist.
In the course of the shots, the panic due to resistance to change emerges first, then replaced by an awareness of the malleability of one’s own identity. Everything is framed within an attempt at self-determination by a young artist in search of her own path.

Alessandra Gervasio’s art comes from everyday emotion, from the search for a cause-effect connection respectively to the problems that undermine our empathy, pushing us to raise those ego defenses that don’t allow us to communicate sincerely with others: by showing her skin – the canvas – first of all, she wants to put us at ease in expressing emotions and thoughts, then placing them in partnership with the community. Her photos start from the rejection of the body of Iacopone da Todi, pass through Bowlby’s theory of attachment and reach Mayakovsky’s brutal intimacy, her inspirations are in fact mixed in order to obtain a solid pedagogical basis in her works that can trigger a reaction in the viewer, forcing him first to hear and then subsequently to understand. “There is no awareness without pain”, Jung said, but nothing is unbearable if you have the support of those around you; for Alessandra the same goes for art, that is like a child, born of a person but what really shapes it are the interactions with the outside world.
